1. Does Strava work in China?
Do not rely on Strava working normally throughout a trip to mainland China. Strava lists China among the countries where its services may be partially or fully restricted. Its notice covers possible problems accessing the app, syncing activities and purchasing subscriptions. It does not provide a feature-by-feature guarantee for travelers. Read Strava's country availability notice.
It helps to separate three things:
| What you want to do | What to plan for |
|---|---|
| Record a run or ride | GPS recording itself does not require mobile data, but your recording app or device must already be set up and working. |
| View maps or use connected features | These can depend on an internet connection. A recorded track and a visible map are different things. |
| Upload an activity to Strava | Uploading needs connectivity to Strava; an activity saved locally may not appear in your feed immediately. |
Strava explains this distinction in its recording guide. For travel, a sensible setup is a tested recorder, a saved route and a way to keep your activity files if uploading fails.
This guide focuses on mainland China. Information was checked against the linked documentation on 18 October 2026; it is not a test of every phone, carrier or local network.
2. Set up your account and test your equipment before you travel
Avoid leaving your first download, registration or login until you arrive. Use the official app store for your device, sign in to your existing account and check that you can access it without needing a verification message you might miss abroad.
Before departure:
- Record a short outdoor activity. Save it and confirm it reaches the correct Strava account.
- Test the same setup without mobile data. Check that you can start, finish and save an activity. Do this near home, rather than discovering a problem halfway through a hike.
- Check location permissions and battery settings. On Android, restrictions on background location or battery use can interrupt recording. Follow the device-specific steps in Strava's GPS troubleshooting guide.
- Prepare navigation separately. If you use Strava routes, check the features available on your plan and download the route where supported. Open it before departure and test your offline setup. Strava documents this in its mobile route guide.
- Keep an alternative recorder ready. A watch or cycling computer you have already tested gives you another way to save the workout.
A travel SIM, roaming plan or VPN should not be treated as a promise that every Strava feature will work. Network access and Strava's own service availability are separate considerations. Our international roaming guide covers the connectivity side of planning.
3. Why does my GPS track look wrong in China?
A missing map, an inaccurate track and a coordinate mismatch need different fixes.
A blank map: First check whether map content is loading. An empty background does not, by itself, prove that your device failed to record location points.
A jagged track, sudden jumps or straight lines across missing sections: These are patterns Strava associates with GPS signal problems. Give the device a clear view of the sky and wait for a position fix before starting. A missing stretch of GPS data cannot simply be reconstructed by Strava afterward. See its GPS troubleshooting explanation.
A track that appears consistently shifted against a map: Coordinate systems are one possible explanation. For example, Amap documents that its GCJ-02 coordinates differ from GPS coordinates in WGS 84. That is a reason to check the map and exported data together—not evidence that every device used in China needs conversion. Coordinate-system reference.
Before changing a file, keep the original and compare the activity in the device maker's app and in Strava. Ask the manufacturer which coordinate system its export uses. Do not apply a conversion just because the activity was recorded in China, and do not automatically add eight hours to timestamps: a UTC timestamp alone is not an error.
4. How to upload runs and rides to Strava
Choose the method that fits the equipment you already use.
Record directly in the Strava app
If your app is accessible and your pre-trip test worked, record and save the activity as usual. If it does not upload, preserve it on the device while you troubleshoot.
On iOS, check You → Activities, refresh the feed and look for Pending Uploads → Retry. On Android, an Unsync'd Activities entry may offer a sync option or a GPX export. Also check available phone storage. Follow Strava's syncing instructions for your version.
As a precaution, do not delete an unsynced workout or reinstall the app before you know whether you have a recoverable copy.
Use Garmin or another compatible GPS device
For Garmin, the official integration links Garmin Connect to Strava through account authorization. Connect the accounts and test a complete upload before traveling. Garmin's connection instructions.
Think of this as two transfers: device → manufacturer's service → Strava. Check where the activity first stops appearing. A successful watch recording does not establish that the later cloud transfer succeeded.
Do not assume a Chinese-market account must be replaced with an international account. If a connection option is missing, ask the manufacturer about your particular account and device before moving data or creating another account.
Import an Apple Watch workout through Apple Health
Strava supports importing workouts recorded with Apple's Workout app through its Health connection, with the necessary permissions. Its documentation specifies eligible workouts from the previous 30 days and says workouts placed in Health by third-party apps are not supported for this import. Set up and test the link before your trip. Apple Health and Strava.
Upload a saved activity file
If your recorder lets you export a workout, Strava's manual upload page accepts FIT, TCX and GPX activity files up to 25 MB. A route file without recorded workout data is not necessarily an uploadable activity. Keep the original export, then try uploading when you can access Strava. Supported upload methods.
5. What about segments, subscriptions and privacy?
Segments: If an uploaded activity is missing a segment, check the recorded track before altering the file. GPS drift or gaps can prevent a match; Strava also provides troubleshooting for hidden and unmatched segments. A coordinate conversion is not a guaranteed fix. Segment matching help.
Subscriptions: A subscription adds features such as route tools and detailed leaderboard analysis. It is not a workaround for connectivity or regional availability. Check the current subscription feature list before buying a plan for your trip.
Privacy: Consider hiding the start and finish of activities beginning at your hotel, and review who can see the activity itself. Strava's map visibility settings and activity privacy settings do different jobs. Map visibility choices also do not automatically carry over to other services. Map visibility settings.
6. Should I use a third-party sync tool or a different app?
Start with the official connection for your device and a manual export option. If you consider a third-party bridge, check exactly which accounts and devices it supports, what data it can access, whether it changes coordinates or timestamps, and how to revoke its access.
There is no need to choose a new tool solely because a guide says all recordings made in China are incompatible with Strava. Test one short activity and preserve your original files before attempting a bulk transfer.
For a backup, use a recorder you already know and have tested without mobile data. Confirm that it saves locally and whether it can export a usable workout file. A navigation app that displays your location is not necessarily a workout recorder. Your offline travel folder can also hold route notes, meeting points and essential trip information.
Frequently asked
Can I use Strava in China without a VPN?
There is no reliable blanket yes or no for every setup. Strava's country notice warns of restrictions, so plan for interruptions and test your own connection. We have not verified a VPN, SIM or carrier that guarantees access.
Can I record a run without internet and upload it later?
GPS recording can be separate from uploading. Test your chosen app or device offline before the trip, save the workout and keep a backup where possible. Later uploading still depends on being able to reach Strava.
Will a Strava subscription make it work in China?
No subscription should be purchased on that assumption. Paid features and regional service availability are separate issues.
Does every GPS file recorded in China need coordinate conversion?
No. Check the recorder's export specification and the actual problem first. Unnecessary conversion can change a file that was already correct.
What is the most useful preparation before a running or cycling trip?
Complete one end-to-end test with the exact equipment you will take: record, save, export or sync, then inspect the activity in Strava. Keep a separate navigation backup so that an upload problem does not leave you without your route.
